What
is a Web Application?
A Web Application is typically a set
of web pages designed to be a front end or interface to a set of applications
or programs running on, or accessed by, a webserver.
Such an application is easier to set
up and maintain than a VPN(Virtual Private Network) and security can be
enforced by using a secure(HTTPS) connection to the web server, using
encrytion.
Typical
uses would be:
A shop chain with 4/5 outlets records
all sales on a central database. This can then be accessed by the accountant/administrator,
who can use the data to calculate V.A.T. returns, stock levels, re-order
quantities, print invoices, shipping labels, purchase orders and the like
and to print all company correspondence.
A building maintenance company updates
operative work sheets, job sheets and time sheets. The operatives can
check their work schedule for the next day from home and print out the
job sheets without going into the office.
A retail or wholesale company trading
on the internet can update their site content(catalogue, images, text
etc.) without having to re-code the pages or upload anything except new images.
The site accepts online orders, which immediately show up in the company's
database. On a successful transaction, the client and the vendor are automatically
sent confirmation emails. The company then uses administration pages to
print packing lists, shipping invoices, labels, delivery notes and
notifications. Similar pages allow their accountant to export the data
into his/her Excel(or whatever) spreadsheet.
The above are simplified descriptions
of some of the web applications we have produced.
Advantages
of Web Applications.
Applications can be written which are
not operating system specific: they can be operated from any operating
syatem which can run a web browser. So Windows, MacOS, linux/unix can
all be used to run the applications. Also the problems of backups and
maintenance are restricted to one location.
The data itself is stored on a central,
secure server which can be configured to only allow connections from particular
locations or from named users, who are required to log in to gain access.
If the software is upgraded or altered
in any way, the changes only have to be made on the central server. No
more installing/deploying the same thing on multiple machines.
